The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures that were central to efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the move.
The bans were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
