The anticipation surrounding this year's gaming ceremony was significant, notably after host Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling image of a desert monolith. The question has been revealed. Larian Studios is developing a completely new Divinity game.
Revealed to be Divinity, the game was presented with a bold trailer featuring memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the very descent into chaos.
A Different Direction
Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio warned that a direct sequel to its beloved RPGs is not currently in development.
That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This distinction suggests that the team is likely building a real-time experience as opposed to another tactical title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a announcement clip is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is widely praised and many say it kicked off the contemporary revival of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for intricate stories, branching plots, and deep class systems—traits that recently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its universe is familiar fare, what truly sets Divinity apart is the remarkable agency given to the player.
Where many modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is brimming with specialized paths only possible with a particular class or origin with a unique decision path.
The series is also wonderfully permissive, allowing players to find creative solutions both in story and combat. Nearly every quest can be completed in a variety of manners, frequently in lateral fashion.
- You might progress the story because you recalled something a dog told you.
- Or, you could overcome an obstacle by using the world itself in a unorthodox way.
More to Come
It is precisely these elements that lead fans and critics to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games of all time. Now, players can anticipate another adventure in this legendary franchise.
